Off Season Hockey Training

In the Golden Days (think Golden Jet) of hockey training camp was a place where the players came to get fit. After a summer of relaxation it was time to get back to work. In the modern days of millionaire athletes, if a player showed up at training camp in a horrible state he may loose his job. The leagues are now that competitive.

So what is a player supposed to do to keep fit in the off-season. There are a lot of off-season hockey training systems around and a lot of experienced trainers out there to help. One thing to consider, at least for NHL players, is how long was their season? There is a big difference in a player who’s team did not make the playoffs as opposed to one that went all the way to the finals. It can make a difference of a month and a half of grueling games. The point is that every player needs time to rest before serious workouts can begin. Even the great players like Ovechkin and Crosby take some time off before they get back into the weight room.

So the first step once the season ends is to recover from any nagging injuries. Anywhere from a couple weeks to perhaps a month or more of rest is needed. From this point the player can transition to a more active training program. The age of a player counts a lot towards his off season training as well. An older player with a consistent muscle mass will not need to work as hard as a rookie who still needs to add fifteen pounds to his body.

One thing is certain, unlike older days – when a player shows up at camp he better be in great shape. If you are looking for an off-season workout program, as with many things these days, Google is your friend. There are many training regimens available online – and a lot are completely free so don’t give out your credit card info too quickly. Do a thorough search first.
