Weight loss is really all about one simple and easy equation – the energy equation. If you understand and apply that equation, you will drastically increase your chance of success. This equation goes like this: change in weight = calories consumed-calories burnt. So to lose weight you would have to either eat less or exercise more. Let’s look at how you can use that equation for your advantage.

Make sure that you consume less than you burn

Here is how you can consume fewer calories than you burn – the easy way!

  • Control portion sizes – Don’t overeat and rather stick to portion sizes.
  • Choose healthy foods – Try to get lots of healthy food in your diet – like lean meat, healthy fats, fat free dairy, wholegrain carbs and lots of fruits and veggies.
  • Preparation is key – Plan your menu before hand and make sure that you prepare your meals with a healthy way – stir-frying, grilling, steaming or poaching.
  • Drink enough water – Water will ensure that you don’t mistake your first for hunger – thus eating less.
  • Avoid refined sugar – Refined sugar will cause a spike in your blood sugar levels -making you tired and full of cravings
  • Avoid saturated fat – Saturated fats should be avoided during a diet.
  • Limit your alcohol intake – Alcohol is full of empty calories
  • Snack smart – Smart snacks would include whole wheat crackers, nuts, fruit, nutrition protein bars and small tubs of fat free yogurt.

Burn more calories than you consume

  • Planning – Plan your exercise before hand – decide when you want to exercise and then also decide what you want to do.
  • Cardio – Aim to get 2 times a week a good cardio in of about 20 minutes.
  • Weight train – Weight training burns calories and fat – even in your sleep! You should aim to get about 3 times a week’s weight training in.
